-Public Works - Alameda Corridor Project-

The Alameda Corridor - East (ACE) Project encompasses a distance of 35 miles of freight rail line through the San Gabriel Valley between East Los Angeles and Pomona.

This project connects the cargo containers from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to the transcontinental rail network.

Train traffic through the San Gabriel Valley is expected to increase by 160 percent by the year 2020. The goal of ACE is to mitigate the effects of increased traffic along the freight rail corridor through the San Gabriel Valley from East Los Angeles to Pomona.

The ACE Project includes transportation safety improvement projects at 42 rail crossings located throughout the San Gabriel Valley, including a grade separation at the intersection of Nogales Street and Valley Boulevard.

The grade separation at Nogales Street and Valley Boulevard will require Nogales Street to be lowered approximately 20 feet under the railroad tracks and Valley Boulevard. Two bridges will be built to carry both railroad traffic and Valley Boulevard motorist traffic over the depressed Nogales Street. Alameda Corridor - East Project to Help Mitigate Traffic.

The newly configured Nogales Street will also include a loop connector road that will replace the normal intersection at Nogales and Valley and will be located in the northeast quadrant of the intersection.

Site preparation began in October 2002, with construction of the grade separation beginning in November 2002. Construction will require the full street closure of both Valley Boulevard and Nogales Street at the intersection.

A temporary detour will be paved on the east side of Nogales and north side of Valley to carry vehicular traffic around the construction. This will allow local traffic to be maintained through the area during the construction.

Construction is anticipated to be completed by spring 2005.

Detour signs will be posted along Nogales Street and Valley Boulevard. Motorists may still experience delays traveling on Nogales Street and Valley Boulevard.

For more information, call the Project Helpline at (888) ACE-1426 or visit the Alameda Corridor East Construction Authority web site at http://www.theaceproject.org/westcovina.htm
