Materials Recovery Facility
The City has contracted with Athens Services to provide waste hauling service in West Covina and has a program which sends the City's waste to a materials recovery facility (MRF) in the City of Industry where it is processed to retrieve recyclables from the waste stream.

Residents use green waste containers for plant/grass clippings (which are diverted to landfills and used as alternative daily cover) and black trash containers (or bins, if you are a business or multifamily customer) for trash.

Curbside sorting is not necessary, although residents may pre-sort their own trash to recycle and redeem their Cash Refund Value (CRV) items.

Waste will not go directly to a landfill. Instead, the waste goes to Athens' MRF for separation of recyclable materials from disposable materials. This process has increased the City's diversion rate to 58% for the year 2003, higher than the State-mandated 50%.

Bulky-Item Pickup
For removal of bulky items including water heaters, furnaces, bed springs, mattresses, dressers, couches, washers, dryers, stoves, tables, chairs, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, patio furniture, bundles of wood or tree branches, etc., contact Athens Services at least one day before your regular collection day to schedule the pickup. Move-in/Move-out Service
When you move in or out of your residence in West Covina, you are permitted unlimited waste collection pickup as a one-time only courtesy. To arrange this service call Athens Services.
