-Homeowner's Permit Procedure-
(Minor Projects and Permits Only - See Note Below)

Homeowner's Permit The Department of Building Division is responsible for issuing building permits for Homeowners. It is our goal to make the process of obtaining a building permit as easy to understand as possible. To accomplish this goal, we have outlined six easy steps to follow as listed below:

STEP 1
Prepare a site plan and a floor plan drawing with dimensions (if required) to show what you would like to do. Call the Building Division (626) 939-8425, if you have special building code questions. Call Planning (626) 939-8422 to check on setbacks, use restrictions, or height limits.

STEP 2
Bring two copies of your drawings to the Building Division, Room 215. A permit technician is available to assist you in filling out the appropriate permit or plan check application. Ask if there is a standard handout or drawing for the type of project you propose. If so, read it and attach it to your plans as it is applicable to your project.

If Planning and Zoning approval is required, you will be directed by the Permit Technician to the Planning Department, Room 208. There a Planner will review your project for approval.

STEP 4
After Planning approval is obtained, return to the Building Division. The Permit Technician and/or Plan Checker will review your plans and application for code compliance. For some projects the plans must be left for a more detailed plan check.

STEP 5
Make any changes or provide any information as required by the Permit Technician and/or Plan Checker. Minor notes or information may be inked onto your plans at the counter.

STEP 6
Read and Sign the Permit Application and appropriate forms. Pay the required fees at the Building Counter.

Congratulations! You now have a permit and may commence work.

Note: This procedure is only applicable for minor alterations and improvements to single home dwellings such as: window replacements, reroofing, new water heater, new heating ventilation or air-conditioning (HVAC) portable spas (fencing required), new electrical service panels some patios, and some room conversions. This procedure is for homeowners who are capable of and wish to do their own work. Many of these permits are checked "over the counter" or within a few days.
