BUILDING INSPECTOR
Job Summary
Under general supervision, inspects residential, commercial, and other types of buildings and structures in all stages of construction, alteration, and repair; enforces safety regulations and building, plumbing, and electrical codes, and other regulations; and does related work as required.
Essential Functions
- Makes field inspections of residential, commercial, and other types of buildings and structures in all states of construction.
- Enforces safety regulations, and building, plumbing, and electrical codes, and other regulations.
- Receives and reviews building plans.
- Performs and assists in regular plan checking at the public counter.
- Inspects swimming pools, new and old plumbing, sewer lines, water heaters, fire lines, furnaces, vents, sprinkler systems, gas piping, and appliances.
- Inspects new and old wiring and electrical installations in residential, commercial, industrial, and other buildings.
- Reviews permit applications and issues permits.
- Examines wiring diagrams, plans, and specifications.
Non-essential Functions
- Verifies that installations conform with permits and plans in all respects.
- Keeps detailed records and prepares reports.
- Assists in special enforcement problems when referred.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledges
Working knowledge of electrical installations and of heating, air conditioning, and ventilating equipment and installations in all types of buildings and structures; of blueprint reading; of building, plumbing, and electrical codes, ordinances, and laws; knowledge of principles and practices of building inspection, building materials, accepted safety standards, and modern methods of building construction.
Experience: Two years experience as a Building Inspector or three years journey level experience in all types of building construction, such as foreman, general contractor, maintenance engineer, or related field.
Education: College level training in related fields is desirable.
Licenses: Possession of a valid Class 3 California Driver's License.
Working conditions: Ability to climb, crawl and lift moderately heavy objects Up to 50 pounds.
