CIVIL ENGINEERING ASSISTANT

Job Summary

Under general supervision performs a range of professional engineering work in gathering and compiling data and checking designs; prepares plans, details, estimates, reports and specifications for a wide variety of civil engineering projects; and does related work as required.

Essential Functions
  1. Designs and prepares plans for public works improvements such as street paving, curbs and gutters, sewers and storm drains.

  2. Assists supervisors in preparing designs and plans for complex public works projects.

  3. Plots levels and topography from existing maps and field notes.

  4. Does a wide variety of drafting work, estimates and calculates grades, computes horizontal and vertical curves, and calculates cross-sections and quantities.

  5. Determines typical sections for street, sewer, and drainage projects.

  6. Prepares specifications and contract documents.

  7. Performs field surveys and establishes line and grade and other related surveying activities.

  8. Determines that all calculations submitted are correct and that engineering design work conforms to the City specifications.

  9. Writes legal descriptions for annexations, streets, alleys, leases, easements, and City property acquisitions and prepares necessary maps.

  10. Reviews title documents for accuracy of legal descriptions.

  11. Draws contour and topographic maps.

  12. Provides engineering information to contractors, engineers, and members of the public; prepares maps.

  13. Supervises and performs field inspection or survey work.

  14. Assists and prepares project and general financial reports.

  15. Prepares information for assessment district improvements.

  16. Prepares lighting plans, channelization plans, traffic signal plans, and specifications.

  17. Analyzes accident records and prepares traffic studies and reports.

  18. Prepares economic feasibility studies for public works projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledges

Thorough knowledge of the principles of all phases of civil engineering; including mathematics, design, drafting, engineering mechanics; surveying methods and procedures; general knowledge of the principles of transportation and traffic engineering and property acquisition, working knowledge of supervision and public relations techniques; and knowledge of technical report preparation techniques.

Education: A Bachelor's degree in engineering.

Experience: One year of full-time experience or the equivalent in part-time experience in field survey or drafting work in connection with civil engineering design and construction. Professional civil engineering experience may be substituted for the required education to a maximum of two years of the education required: (1) on a year-for-year basis if certified as an "Engineer in Training" by the State of California, or (2) on a basis of two years' experience equivalent to one year of required education.

License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
