CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESEARCH ANALYST I, II
Job Summary
Under administrative direction, conducts, interprets, and evaluates original research projects; formulates projects and programs relating to the field of criminal justice; and does related work as required.
Essential Functions
- Develops original research regarding drugs, gang activity, and other crime-related activities.
- Devises various data processing approaches to determine relevant research information and data, and works with computer personnel in the programming and processing of social, economic, and community and agency data as related to crime and delinquency.
- Prepares reports, plans, and recommendations based on research findings related to criminal justice.
- Consults with other local and regional agency and professional personnel in the development of project programs and plans, and the practical application of various criminal justice programs.
- Consults with other agencies concerning crime and delinquency problems and programs and the prevention or resolution of existing or future crime and delinquency problems.
- Answers public inquiries regarding level and types of crime in City from persons interested in moving into West Covina.
- Handles various inquiries from graduate students doing research on criminal justice and related topics.
- Conducts research for other agencies and assigned attorneys related to lawsuits and/or other agency support information.
Non-essential Functions
- Provides support functions for other Police Department activities on an as-needed basis.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledges
Thorough knowledge of research methods including research design and data collection. Statistical analysis desirable. Working knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of modern criminal justice. Knowledge of effective communication practices and techniques, both oral and written.
Education: Graduation from a four-year college or university
with a major in the field of criminal justice or related
social/behavioral science including course work in statistics and
data analysis or related field is required. Paid experience over
the minimum may be substituted for education on a year for year
basis up to two years.
Experience: Three years of experience in a public safety
organization performing criminal investigation analysis.
Criminal Justice Research Analyst II
Satisfaction of the qualifications listed above for criminal Justice Research Analyst I plus two years of experience equivalent to what would be achieved by a Criminal Justice Research Analyst 1.
