ELECTRICIAN LEADWORKER
Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs and leads the work of a crew in the maintenance, replacement, and repair of traffic signal systems, street lighting systems, and electrical systems and equipment in various city buildings and facilities; perform related duties as required.
Essential Functions
Acts as lead worker and participates in the following activities:
- Replaces, repairs, and maintains street lighting fixtures, traffic signal systems, lights and lighting systems in community and other public buildings, parks, playgrounds, and city facilities.
- Replaces or installs street light poles and other overhead fixtures.
- Performs maintenance work on electrical motors used in sewage lift stations and water pumping facilities.
- Participates in a variety of electrical work on fixtures, equipment, circuits, appliances, and related electrical systems.
Individual responsibilities include:
- Keeps records of labor, materials, and supplies used: estimates and orders materials necessary to complete assigned jobs.
- Assists in evaluating performance of subordinate personnel and instructs personnel in safe work practices.
- Responds to emergency situations and takes appropriate action.
- Serves in an advisory capacity to various departments and committees relative to locations of traffic signal poles, cabinets, loop detectors and reviews plans to ensure accessibility to needed replacement parts.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledges and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, and tools of the electrical trade; occupational hazards and safety precautions; electrical codes and other applicable standards and regulations; practices and principles of supervision.
Ability to organize, assign, and review the work of journey-level electricians and helpers; make estimates of time and materials needed for electrical work; diagnose malfunctions of electrical systems and restore to operating standards; read and comprehend blueprints and schematic diagrams of circuitry; work with hand tools and testing equipment characteristic of the electrical trade.
Education: Coursework in electricity and electrical codes.
Experience: Four years journey-level experience in electrical systems maintenance or installation.
License: Possession of a Class C California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.
Certificate: Level I certificate in traffic signal repair
desirable.
Working conditions: Incumbents must be able to distinguish color coded wires; frequently lift weights in excess of 50 pounds; work in confined spaces; climb ladders, scaffolds, and boom trucks; stoop, bend and stand for extended periods.
