ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN
Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs responsible sub-professional engineering work in either the office or the field; drafts various public works projects and maps, makes engineering computations and does routine design work; performs inspections on a variety of public works projects; performs responsible survey party work; does related work as required.
Essential Functions
- Performs drafting operations involved in preparing drawings of public works projects, graphs, and profiles, including sidewalks, curbs, gutters, parking lots, park improvements, traffic signal installations, street reconstructions, excavation cross sections, earth work, and other related items.
- Revises and updates base maps, sewer maps, storm drain maps, water maps, fire run maps, and other maps.
- Checks plans submitted by developers and citizens for compliance with City standards and issues Engineering Construction Permits.
- Prepares legal descriptions for right-of-way purposes.
- Handles citizen and contractor complaints and inquiries and provides information on departmental operations.
- Receives, logs, and reviews Insurance Certificates and bonds for compliance with City requirements.
- Prepares cost estimates, and reports for proposed projects and reports on completed projects.
- Performs or assists in the performance of land, topographic, route, and City surveys, prepares survey and construction notes and reports.
- Maintains office Engineering files.
- Performs detailed inspections of the methods and materials used in various construction projects for compliance with predetermined standards.
- Reviews and interprets construction plans and specifications and consults with supervisor on deviations.
- Submits detailed reports on work progress and material quantities.
- Consults with contractors and private parties on various issues related to upcoming construction projects and work in progress.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledges
Knowledge of: construction methods, materials, and plans; principles of engineering mathematics; drafting methods and equipment, both manual and computer; use and methods of adjusting transits and levels; surveying procedures, instruments, and equipment; methods and practices of public works inspection; materials testing procedures; familiarity with engineering design, cost estimates, specifications, checking of engineering plans, legal descriptions, right-of-way procedures; effective communication techniques for interacting with contractors, the public, and Engineering Department personnel.
Education: Graduation from high school supplemented by college level courses in engineering mathematics and drafting or surveying.
College level education in engineering may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis up to a maximum of three years of the required experience. A Bachelor's degree in engineering may be substituted for up to three years of experience.
Experience: Four years experience including the performance of responsible sub-professional engineering drafting work, field survey party work, or engineering inspection work.
Licenses: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
Working Conditions: Requires walking, climbing, stooping, and lifting items up to 30 pounds.
