EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADWORKER

Job Summary

Under general supervision, leads and performs the more difficult work in the overhauling and repairing of fire equipment, light construction equipment, trucks and autos powered by gasoline and diesel fuels; and performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions
  1. Plans, assigns and leads the work of equipment mechanics and welders engaged in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, fire equipment, light construction equipment, trucks and other vehicles.

  2. Makes inspections of emergency requests in the field and determines the nature of equipment failure, extensiveness of repairs, tools and material needed to accomplish repairs and the feasibility of making repairs on site.

  3. Performs journey level work in determining the nature of equipment failure and makes necessary repairs.

  4. Assigns and leads the work of a crew engaged in the welding and fabrication of parts.

  5. Reviews work priorities and technical and supervisory problems with division supervisor; evaluates the performance of assigned personnel.

  6. Orders necessary parts and materials to perform maintenance and repair of equipment; maintains inventory of parts and tools.

  7. Maintains records of work performed and parts and materials used.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of techniques and methods of overhauling and repairing gasoline and diesel powered equipment and related components, including engines, carburetors, and electrical systems; theory, care and operation of gasoline and diesel powered internal combustion engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment; methods, materials, tools and equipment of the trade and their use in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment; general knowledge of preventive maintenance inspection methods.

Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work; repair and overhaul gasoline and diesel powered equipment including fire equipment and related components with a minimum of supervision; prepare and maintain records of work orders, work completed, parts and materials used; supervise and train employees.

Experience: Two years of experience as a journey level mechanic including diagnosis and repair of gasoline and diesel automobiles, light and heavy equipment. Knowledge and experience in the repair of fire engines, trucks and related specialized vehicles.

License: A valid Class A and Class C California drivers license, and a satisfactory driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents must be able to perform heavy tasks related to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment which includes lifting of objects weighing more than 50 pounds; regular exposure to grease and machinery; Physical demands require bending, stooping, and climbing; requires reading of manuals, directions, and bulletins.
