FIRE ENGINEER
Job Summary
Under general supervision, drives standard fire trucks, aerial platform (snorkel), and other automotive equipment in responding to fire and emergency calls; operates fire pumpers and other apparatus in the suppression of fires; assists in inspecting and maintaining equipment; participates in company fire presentation and pre-fire planning inspections; and does related work as required.
Essential Functions
- Responds to fire and other emergency alarms by driving assigned truck or other automotive equipment to required location.
- Operates pumper equipment and assists in fire suppression and the protection of life and property.
- Operates medical equipment and administers first aid.
- Assumes primary responsibility for the inspection, servicing, and maintenance of assigned fire equipment.
- Inspects commercial and residential structures to insure compliance with federal, state and local fire prevention laws and regulations.
- Assists in cleaning and maintaining fire station, quarters, and surrounding grounds; personally maintains Fire Department apparatus and instructs Firefighters in these duties.
- Inspects equipment and performs major and minor repairs an needed.
- Participates in a continuous training and instruction program through study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
- May train or assist in training probationary Firefighters
- May be required to serve as Acting Fire Captain or perform other fire fighting or fire prevention duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledges
Thorough knowledge of principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; technical fire fighting techniques; modern fire prevention and suppression methods; the design, use, and maintenance of fire equipment and apparatus, and ability to operate fire trucks, pumps and other such equipment safely and effectively; departmental rules and regulations; federal, state and local laws and regulations governing fire prevention and safety; first aid and the operation of inhalators and resuscitators; the geography of the City, the location of water mains and fire hydrants. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public; perform duties requiring physical endurance and agility; work under pressure and hazardous conditions; and aptitude for learning a variety of legal and technical materials.
Experience: Three years of experience as a Firefighter in the City of West Covina.
Education: Completion of 15 college units leading to an A.A. Degree in Fire science, including 12 mandatory units taken from the prescribed list published by the Fire Chief and approved by the Human Resources Department; and
Substitution: Experience can be substituted for non-mandatory units as follows: one unit per full year completed at "5" step Firefighter with time based on a cumulative total, starting not earlier than three and one-half year after initial appointment.
Licenses: A valid California Driver's License and Firefighters' Special License. A valid EMT Certificate.
