Elected to West Covina City Council:
March 2003
Mayor Roger Hernandez is honored to serve the City he loves. Born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, Roger feels extremely fortunate to have grown up in this community.
The roots of the Hernandez family tree have been planted in West Covina for more than 25 years and Roger's parents always encouraged him to embrace and be proud of where he lives. He grew up with the understanding that the civic participation of West Covina residents is our City's greatest strength. This was a belief Roger took to heart at an early age, and it led him to a life of public service.
Roger graduated from Nogales High School. He continued his education to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California-Riverside, a Masters in Public Administration from the University of La Verne, and a Masters in Governance Certificate from the California School Boards Association (CSBA).
While attending UC Riverside, Roger served as a Youth Counselor and Prevention Specialist for a County program to provide guidance to at-risk elementary school children. He also served as a Track and Field Coach for schools in the Rowland Unified School District and witnessed the benefits of after school programs first hand. Upon graduating from U.C. Riverside, Roger served as a Field Representative to Congresswoman Grace Napolitano. He worked on a variety of federal issues that impact the San Gabriel Valley. He is currently partnering with his father in a variety of financial investments, including Real Estate.
From 1999-2003, Roger served the children, parents, and district employees in West Covina as a Member of the Rowland Unified School Board. He was appointed the School Board President in 2002-2003. Since the first day he was elected to the Rowland Unified School Board and during his time on the West Covina City Council, Roger has made time to meet directly with residents throughout town. He has an "open door policy" and is happy to hear your ideas about improving the quality of life and public services of our City.
In 2003 Roger began his term as a member of the West Covina City Council where he has worked tirelessly to revitalize blighted areas of the city and truly bring West Covina into the 21st century. Through his position on the Council, Roger has taken on multiple leadership roles. He serves as West Covina's Liaison with LA Works, League of Cities, Independent Cities Association, Contract Cities Association, San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, Southern California Association of Governments, a member of the Foothill Transit Board of Directors, and trustee to the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito Abatement and Vector Control. Roger believes it is equally important for him to connect daily with City residents and community leaders and is a member of the West Covina Lions and currently Co-Chair of the "Night on the Town" Finance Committee.
Increasing public safety and creating new recreational opportunities are some of Roger's priorities and he supported the construction of the Cameron Gymnasium/Community Center, implementation of the West Covina Ambulance program, Downtown Glendora Revitalization, and the addition of new police officers in our community.
Roger has also been involved with and worked on several economic development projects including, the commercial and recreational development at the BKK Landfill, Citrus/Workman, and new restaurants at Eastland Mall - Johnny Carino's, Pick Up Stix, Islands, and Chipotle. Roger is proud to have helped bring additional dining and entertainment options to the City. His diligent work helped establish Edward's Cinema, Macaroni Grill, Red Brick Pizza, Dono Sushi, Ohanas Hawaiian BBQ, and Vietta Coffee.
Education has always been a passion for Roger, who has dedicated much of his professional career to improving schools and enhancing classroom instruction for the children of West Covina and future generations. Recently, Roger embarked on a new path in his career in education as an Adjunct Professor of Political Science at Citrus College and Rio Hondo College.
Making West Covina a better place to live, work, and raise our children is the guiding principle of everything Roger does as Mayor. Mayor Hernandez believes we can continue and improve upon a long tradition of City excellence. He looks forward to meeting you one-on-one and hearing your ideas in the near future.
