West Covina Police and West Covina Kiwanis sponsoring a Bicycle Rodeo and Helmet Giveaway

WEST COVINA, CA - The West Covina Police Department and the West Covina Kiwanis are sponsoring a Bicycle Rodeo tomorrow, January 20, 2007 at the West Covina Police Department, 1444 W. Garvey Avenue. The event runs from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, and is scheduled to provide bicycle helmets, bicycle inspections and safety tips to any 3rd grader within the West Covina School Districts.

History: Dr. Denise Patton, Principal at San Jose Edison School and current board member of the West Covina Kiwanis contacted the West Covina Police Department stating they had over 300 bicycle helmets to give away to any 3rd grader in the West Covina Unified School District. Officer Ray Perez coordinated with the Kiwanis and arranged to put on a Bicycle Rodeo. Officer Perez then visited with all the elementary schools within the district and invited all the 3rd graders to bring their bikes, have them inspected, and receive safety tips. Each participant will then receive a safety helmet at no cost.

The 3rd graders were targeted because it is at this age that students are starting to ride to and from school and around the community. Providing this kind of instruction and information to children at this age will minimize the chances of being injured from a bicycle related accident.

The event begins at 9:00 am and will be held at the police department parking structure on the second level.

The West Covina Police and Kiwanis are hopeful that this event becomes an annual one, reaching out each year to every 3rd grader within the West Covina School District.
