West Covina Celebrates Arbor Day and 25th Year As Tree City USA

WEST COVINA, CA - West Covina has been named, a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation. It is the twenty-fifth consecutive year West Covina has received this national recognition. In fact, West Covina was the one of the first twenty-five, of the 145 cities in California that has been designated as a Tree City USA.

To become a Tree City USA, a community must meet four standards: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.

March 4th has been designated as Arbor Day and in coordination with the West Covina Beautiful organization, the City will be hosting the annual Arbor Day ceremony at Cortez Park in celebration of the park's 50th birthday. The park is located at 2441 E. Cortez Avenue. The ceremony will begin at 1 pm. There will be live entertainment, refreshments, handouts, and a special appearance by "Smokey the Bear." For information about this event contact the City's Public Works Department (626) 939-8425.

"Trees play an important role in our effort to keep West Covina beautiful," said Mayor Mike Touhey, "along with other benefits like helping clean the air and providing shade."
