GRAFFITI REWARD PROGRAM TO BEGIN

WEST COVINA, CA - The West Covina Police Department will begin offering a $100 cash reward to any person who provides information leading to the arrest of anyone for the crime of Graffiti. The information can be provided anonymously and the reward still be received.

"Graffiti in our community has become so prevalent that in many instances someone must have seen the crime being committed, yet chose not to call the police" said Lt. Mark Dettor. The Police Department is hoping that the added incentive of a cash reward, coupled with the ability to remain completely anonymous will prompt citizens to call when they see someone writing graffiti.

In addition the reward will be immediate. That is, the caller can call the Police Department back in an hour or so to find out the disposition of the information provided. If their information resulted in an arrest for graffiti vandalism, the caller will be given a number and told to come to the front desk at the police station, contact the Watch Commander, and receive their cash reward.

The West Covina City Council approved providing rewards for information on graffiti vandals at their regular meeting May 1st, 2007. The new program will begin next week. Similar programs have had success in neighboring Cities and seem to be gaining in popularity in those communities that offer such rewards.

The City spends about $130,000 annually to remove graffiti from public places and accessible private property.

Information released by Lt. Mark Dettor. Questions, call 626 939-8503.
