-Councilmember Mike Touhey-
Mike Touhey
Mike.Touhey@westcovina.org
Mike Touhey is a native Californian, who grew up in this area, born in the adjacent city of La Puente.
Mike comes from a very close family--which is the reason he missed most of his freshman year in High School. Mike made a choice to be with his father, who was dying of lung cancer. Following the death of his Dad, Mike left High School and immediately jumped into a full-time job, at only 15 years old. He worked, with his brothers, at Rockview Dairy in West Covina.
Later, Mike purchased his first home here in West Covina in 1979 at only 17 years old. Mike continued to run the business, "Rockview Dairy" from 1977 until 1997.Then, in 1988 Mike married his wife, Debbie, and they worked together at starting a new business, "The Michael Touhey Public Relations Firm". The business specializes in Investments/Development. While starting the business, they also started a family.
Then, in 2000 Mike & Debbie purchased the Red Baron Pizza and ran the business until 2004. Mike continues running his successful Public Relations Firm to this day. And, their two children, one boy and one girl, attend West Covina schools. Morgan, age 15, is a Sophomore at West Covina High School. She is active in WescovAires Brandon, age 12, is a 7th grader at Hollencrest Middle School. He is active in Basketball and is a member of the School Band.
Councilmember Touhey was first elected to the West Covina City Council in 1994. He ran on a platform based upon the prompt and safe closure of the BKK Landfill. He made the community a promise to follow through with that closure, and that promise was kept. The BKK Landfill was closed in 1996. The closure allowed the property to be transitioned to community uses.
In 2006, Groundbreaking Ceremonies were started at the former BKK Landfill site. As a result, new projects were proposed, and approved consisting of: The Big League Dream Sports Complex; The Heights of West Covina Shopping Center; and, a proposed Office Complex, with 150 acres still remaining, with use to be decided upon. This is just one example of Councilmember Touhey backing up his word-- the promise was kept.
Councilmember Touhey has strongly supported increased public safety and a call to add Police Officers to the streets of West Covina. He has, also, supported the need for Recreational opportunities for the citizens of all ages. And, has strongly supported responsible Economic Development projects which generate revenue back to the city, while keeping taxes low, and providing new jobs for the community.
Councilmember Touhey has received numerous awards from several community organizations, including: Rotarian of the year in 1994; West Covina PTA Volunteer of the Year in 1995; the Community Service Award from the NAACP; and on two occasions was honored, as a nominee, for the Small Business Person of the Year from West Covina Chamber of Commerce. He has, also, been honored as a Nominee for the Citizen of the Year from the Chamber of Commerce; and, was selected as the West Covina Hometown Hero in 2001.
